A handbag made of 99% air: NASA's aerogel enters the fashion world

Would you step out of the house with this wild-looking bag on your shoulder?
If you knew what it was made of, you just might.

The bag was presented by a Parisian fashion house called Coperni.

What makes it unique is that it's crafted from a material called "silica aerogel" — a substance composed of 99% air and 1% glass.

The material was developed by NASA for use in outer space, and it's considered the lightest material on Earth!

The bag is the largest object ever made from this material, and yet it weighs just 33 grams in total.
It can withstand temperatures of up to 1,200°C and pressure 4,000 times its own weight (which, to be fair, isn't saying all that much — given that it barely weighs anything to begin with 😉)
