What I chose to ignore this year, and why it mattered

There are many things I didn't do this past year.

-

I didn't watch the news.
I didn't listen to the pointless chatter of politicians.
I didn't try to figure out whose interest it serves for me to hate the people living around me.
I didn't look for reasons why other people aren't good enough.
I didn't worry about problems I have absolutely no power to solve.

-

On Yom Kippur, the endless noise around us falls silent for a moment, and we can remember the things that make us so good — as individuals and as a people.

It's also a good time to decide to carry that with us into the new year.
The inciting, oppressive, and threatening voices around us will always be there, but the choice to close our ears to them is always in our hands.

-

And perhaps soon a miracle will happen and this unbearably difficult period will be behind us.
With all our hostages and soldiers back home — in civilian life, in traffic jams, and in that one-of-a-kind Israeli-ness.

May it be so 🙏
