The technology powering the Sphere's massive LED exterior

The Sphere in Las Vegas is the largest and most impressive LED screen in the world — and the technology powering it is every bit as remarkable.

-

The Sphere is a performance venue built in the shape of a giant ball.
What makes it so extraordinary is that its entire exterior surface is a massive screen displaying stunning animations and video content.

The Sphere is also the most expensive entertainment venue in Vegas — construction difficulties during the COVID era sent its price tag soaring to over $2 billion.

The exterior LED screen is made up of 1.2 million small LED tiles installed side by side, and inside the structure an additional large screen was built at 16K resolution.

-

When you play a video file — say, a pianist performing — every movement of the pianist or the camera becomes a rapid mathematical calculation handled by the GPU, which repositions objects and adjusts the color and brightness of pixels accordingly.

The Sphere carries out this task using approximately 1,500 NVIDIA A6000 graphics cards. In Israel, the consumer price of each unit starts at around ₪23,000.

-

Beyond video playback itself, there are extraordinary technical challenges involved in distributing the processing workload across the graphics cards, collecting their output, and routing it to the various panels.
Another challenge is synchronizing all the panels so they play the video with millisecond precision.
NVIDIA solved these challenges through a suite of companion software tools that enable seamless synchronization of data across all the processors.

Because the screen's size and shape are unlike anything else in the world, a dedicated studio was also established whose sole purpose is designing video content for display on the Sphere.

So the next time you're in Vegas and you see this wonder, spare a thought for the technological marvel that makes it possible.
