Setting up a physical home server — and why real server hardware

I've always dreamed of having a real server at home — and now it's happened.
To mark the occasion, I put together a short video showcasing the process. Hope you enjoy it.

In the cloud era, most of the servers I set up and manage are virtual.

Their physical location is somewhere in Europe or the United States, and management is done remotely.

Setting up a local server isn't really a complicated affair — in principle, you can take any computer and turn it into a server.
But a true server is one that includes certain hardware characteristics better suited to the role.

Server hardware is built for continuous workloads over many years, and the likelihood of failures is far lower than with a regular computer.

I found this particular server abandoned in a client's storage room.
I offered to help with a few things that weren't included in the visit, and in return I took the server home with me.

What will I use it for?
Mainly for testing, evaluating new platforms, and of course — a lot of fun.

Coming to you soon 😊
